Find a photographer
First you'll need to find a photographer, hopefully that's me but if not that's cool. Find one. Check out their work & make sure you like their style of photography and try to get a sense of who they are. Read their about me page… Do you like them? Could you see yourself working with me?. I wouldn't hire a photographer based only on budget and being affordable that could lead to failed expectations.
location , location, location..
Now you need to select a location for your family portraits. I shoot primarily on location outdoors in natural lighting. Unless shooting an event that requires speedlights etc.
Three options that I always suggest are a local park, the beach, and your home/yard. Honestly portraits can be taken anywhere. Try to pick a spot that has some meaning to you or your family. Or if you've seen a random pretty spot on the side of the road. I am always down for an adventure that involves memories being created. The point is the location could be anywhere. It's my job to make the background and you look beautiful. If you need help picking a spot I can definitely help with that.
What to wear
I suggest picking one outfit first for yourself or another family member and building around that to coordinate for everyone else. Not too matchy-matchy but, if that's the vibe you want. Go for it!
A couple more tips on what photographs well and what doesn't.
Select neutral solid colors beige, taupe, gray, cream, brown, black, and white.
Try to avoid logos, crazy patterns and bright colors. It can be a little distracting.
Remember, to keep your location in mind when picking and organizing your outfits. You don't want to have photos taken in a green grassy field while you are wearing a green dress.
Most importantly, make sure you & your family feel comfortable in whatever you choose. Look good, feel good!
Extra tips
Bring along props or extra clothes to add variety, action and fun to your session. Props give you something to do which often leads to funny genuine moments throughout the photo session. The idea of a photography session is to capture you and your family at this exact moment in time. So let's make it fun and more interesting!
